Ernest Maes was born in Dendermonde (Belgium) in 1939. He became a solo horn player at the Philharmonic Orchestra of Antwerp and taught horn at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels, forming many leading horn players. He worked as conductor - former student of André Van der Noot - at the Royal Opera of Ghent. Het founded the Youth Orchestras of West-Flanders and Limburg, also being their animated conductor. He conducted in Belgium and abroad and taught orchestra direction at the Flemish Conservatory of Antwerp.

As head-master of the Academy Voeren, he was inspired by composer Peter Cabus to compose music for secondary music education.

After his retirement he returned to this first passion and plays the horn up to the present day.
